An honor too huge is bestowed upon me in the Summer 2021 issue of Interweave Crochet Magazine, and this event lures me out of comfortable retirement. Listed as one of the three women who shaped the crochet industry, I am at a loss for words. Well, not really at a total loss. Yes, I certainly can shape crochet; whether or not I have done anything to the industry is a matter of opinion! WOWSERS. I am a little worried about the iconic thing. Benedict Cumberbatch is iconic. Idina Menzel is iconic. Gumby and Pokey, Daleks, Reddi-Wip and Hershey bars are iconic.
Jennifer Mogonye, author of this flattering article, don’t know me very well, do she? I sort of love her for it. Somehow she captures the spirit and mood of that magical event, the induction ceremony into the Crochet Hall of Fame at the 2016 Crochet Guild of America conference in Charleston. One note I will add to her account. During the design parade I welled up so verklempt that I messed up the miiddle of the song. I can see the revised title now: DESIGN ICON CHOKES UP!

Dear Doris ~ How wonderful to hear from you! Thanks so much for getting in touch. You definitely are iconic! Your designs and your understanding of all things crochet (fit, stitch, shape, pattern, etc.) are beyond brilliant. I have to get out and buy that issue, so thanks for sending the photo.
I can’t begin to tell you how often I think of you. Every time I pick up my Tulip crochet hooks, which is just about every day. Oh, and when I wander through a yarn store, when I browse through crochet books looking for patterns, and when we make s’mores at my daughter’s courtyard fireplace. I still have the article you wrote about the origin of crochet. 🥢 You are an amazing talent. 🧶
And by the way, George says your cookies are iconic! 🍪 (And I have to agree!)

Doris, that is an honor well deserved! You are definitely iconic in the crochet world. I never felt so connected to a designer as I did you & was honored that you invited me to be a mentor of your Ravelry group. Your knowledge of crochet & designs is amazing! I hope that you’re truly enjoying your well deserved retirement. I too have recently retired & hope to now crochet more & you better bet some of your designs will be among my projects. I guess I’m going to have to purchase this edition of Interweave as I’ve dropped my subscription. I wish you all the best, you’ve earned it!

The year was 1993. I was watching a PBS program and you were one of the special guests. The fondness you spoke about your mother and crochet work struck a chord with me. I decided to pick up a hook and try to crochet.
I discovered that my mother’s mother, my father’s mother, and my father’s grandmother had given me a priceless gift: when I picked up a hook, I was able to create works that a person with no experience should have been able to accomplish. I have said that they gave me the crochet ‘gene’.
From PBS I discovered your books. I first met you in 2012. I had interrupted your dinner with Vashti. I think I called you my “rock star”. You complemented me when you saw a “Ling Collar“ I had made. I was overwhelmed that the designer of my creation liked it!
In 2016, I was thrilled to be in that parade. I wore the “FairPoint Topper”, and my cousin wore the “Chrysanthemum Tea Shawl”.
You are still my rock star.
I’ve been crocheting for 42 years and your China Doll pattern was a REVELATION. You are amazing!!
